Question: #1244

Homework 5 Complete Solution

Homework #5: Part 1

1.  The average woman is 1.619 m tall (with a standard deviation of 0.064 m).  A sample of Scripps women (n = 15) had an average height of 1.753m.  Test the claim that Scripps women are tall than average using a one-sample z-test.  State the hypotheses and significance level, carry out the test, compare the observed value to the critical value, state the conclusions with respect to both hypotheses.

2.  The average college woman sleeps 7.37 hours each night (with a standard deviation of 1.32 hours).  Suppose we found a sample of woman (n =22) who had slept 9.54 hours that night.  Did that sample sleep significantly longer than average?  State the hypotheses and significance level, carry out the one-sample z-test, compare the observed value to the critical value, state the conclusions with respect to both hypotheses.

3.  Jaccard and Becker describe a study that asked whether the actual speed traveled on highways posted with a 55 mph speed limit significantly exceeded 55.  From the data given below, did it?  Report your findings in a Results paragraph modeled on that found on p. 250 of Jaccard & Becker (5th edition).  Section 8.12 (pp. 250-1) provides a detailed analysis of a Results paragraph.  (Show all the steps - state hypotheses and the formulas and tests - taken before writing the paragraph.)

4.  Use the data from the class survey, examine the question on characterizing one's social views (q. 19).  Derive a null and alternative hypothesis that you would like to test for that question.  Test them - show your work.  Then report the results in a paragraph, like in q 3.
